In 2010 we won a competitive tender to provide national and international benchmarked analysis of Hong Kong Hospital Authority (HKHA) Intensive Care Unit (ICU) data.
Benchmarking involves defining a standard or reference by which others can be measured or judged.
The contract saw five years of HKHA ICU data (from 2007 to 2011) pass through a rigorous validation process before being analysed and reported on.
Comparative analyses
The data were analysed and benchmarked both:
- nationally – with HKHA regions, hospital types, ICU types and individual ICUs being compared against each other; and
- internationally - with the HKHA data being compared against the Case Mix Programme Database (CMPD).
Analyses content
These analyses looked at critical care provision (using population denominators), case mix (including demographics), resource use, outcomes (crude and risk-adjusted hospital mortality) and selected quality indicators.
Presentation of results
Alongside detailed statistical reports, results were presented to the HKHA both in person and via webinar.
