Research

The ICNARC Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) is registered with the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (ID number: 42) and has a strong reputation for designing and conducting high quality research to improve the care and outcomes of critically ill patients.  Our broad programme of research includes:

  • Randomised controlled trials – studies in which participants are randomly allocated to two (or more) groups to compare different treatments and treatment strategies to test whether one is better or, at times, at least as good as another. Randomisation ensures that the groups of people being compared are as similar as possible to start with, except for the treatment they receive.
  • Observational studies – studies that examine data on individuals with a specific condition but do not intervene in their care as a randomised controlled trial would.
  • Systematic reviews – studies which bring together the results of a number of trials/studies relevant to a particular illness using explicit and systematic methods. This approach provides an objective and reliable way of reviewing research evidence.
  • Methodological studies – studies that seek to improve the methods used in research.

If you would like to collaborate with ICNARC on a specific piece of research, please contact us on 020 7269 9277 or ctu@icnarc.org.

If you would like access to Case Mix Programme (CMP) data for research purposes, please view our ‘Data access and analyses request policy’ and ‘Request for analyses/data form’.

NIHR CTU Support Funding

The ICNARC CTU receives National Institute for Health and Care Research CTU Support Funding.  This funding has been awarded to support the unit in developing and supporting NIHR trials.
